New Film Alert ‘TILL’

Beachie Beauty's on Set

Till is a profoundly emotional and cinematic film about the true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14 year old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. In Mamie’s poignant journey of grief turned to action, we see the universal power of a mother’s ability to change the world.

When I was approached to write and direct a story about Emmett Till, I found myself drawn to a singular figure at the center of his orbit. I saw an opportunity to subvert expectations and approach the narrative through another lens – from the maternal point of view of Mamie Till Mobley. Had it not been for Mamie, her son’s memory would have evaporated into thin air. She was the catalyst for a modern day civil rights movement that has laid a formidable framework for future activists and Freedom Fighters. I felt compelled to champion Mamie’s legacy and center her in the spotlight where she rightfully belongs.

Mamie’s untold story is one of resilience and courage in the face of adversity and unspeakable devastation. For me, the opportunity to focus the film on Mamie, a multi-faceted Black woman, and peel back the layers on this particular chapter in her life, was a tall order I accepted with deep respect and responsibility.  On the daily, Mamie combatted racism, sexism, and misogyny, which was exponentially heightened in the wake of Emmett’s murder. Mamie did not cower. Instead, she evolved into a warrior for justice who helped me to understand and shape my own similar journey in activism. And as a filmmaker, showing Mamie in all her complex humanity was of utmost importance.

The crux of this story is not about the traumatic, physical violence inflicted upon Emmett – which is why I refused to depict such brutality in the film – but it is about Mamie’s remarkable journey in the aftermath. She is grounded by the love for her child, for at its core, TILL is a love story. Amidst the inherent pain and heartbreak, it was critical for me to ground their affection throughout the film. The cinematic language and tone of TILL was deeply rooted in the balance between loss in the absence of love; the inconsolable grief in the absence of joy; and the embrace of Black life alongside the heart wrenching loss of a child.

I hope viewers will empathize with the humanities on screen and see our present cultural and political realities within this film. And I hope that Mamie’s story helps us all to realize the power within ourselves to continue to fight for the change we want to see in the world, just as she did.

Fight for your children, it’s what you believe. #beachiebeautyapproved

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe/Zambia

What could be more romantic than holding hands with your special man as you stand just a few feet away from one of the most powerful natural wonders in the world? Located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the spray from these falls can be seen from thirty miles away. Best viewed from both sides, day passes for border crossings are available in both directions.

If you’re up for bungee jumping, you can be arranged from a bridge spanning the Zambezi River. If not, then safari trip to view elephants, giraffes, and lions in their natural habitat would fill the bill. Try a dinner cruise down the Zambezi River. These are but a few of the many recreational activities available to those who choose Victoria Falls for their romantic holiday.

Looking for romance in Egypt? How about a trip which includes a luxury boat trip down the Nile as if you were Cleopatra and Marc Anthony? Trek to the Giza plain and wonder at the majesty of the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Stroll through the Cairo National Museum and end your Egyptian romance on the beach at a popular Red Sea resort. Red Sea Beaches are so beautiful and hotel there provide all-inclusive packages plus their safari tours, diving trips, animation parties, unlimited shopping options, and oriental cafes. If you are looking for an unforgettable romantic vacation in Egypt, then Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh are your best destination.

The Seychelles

If five-star luxury, pristine beaches and customer service which caters to your every whim fit your idea of the perfect romantic holiday then perhaps the African Island nation of the Seychelles is for you. Many of the major hotel brands synonymous with luxuries such as Raffles and Hilton are represented here.

People in the Seychelles speak Creole however English and French are widely used as well. This Indian Ocean archipelago consists of 150 islands situated off the east coast of the main African continent. Activities are oriented to water sports, local casinos, restaurants and bars.

Then again if you’re here for romance, you really need little more than the views and the time to spend with your special someone. Due to the remote location, a travel insurance policy that assists with emergency evacuations might be a good idea.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa. It currently serves as the legislative seat of government in South Africa as the South African Parliament is located here. From a tourism point of view, Cape Town records more tourists annually than any other city in Africa.

What’s so romantic about Cape Town? Romance in Cape Town could easily be said to center around the sunset. What better time for Romance to begin. Yes during the day you can gallop a horse through the waves of a pristine beach or take a helicopter tour of the wine land. But the sundown really does spell romance in Cape Town. Try a sunset champagne cruise, or a sunset cable car ride up Table Mountain. Any of theses destinations would be right for you.

Pawleys Island South Carolina

Beachie Beauty Travels

Pawleys Island is right on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s name was adopted after the sons of a European settler, Percival Pawley. Did you know that George Washington visited the island after he was elected. Cool fact, right. Every year around April the family and I would travel to South Carolina from Georgia for spring break. The drive is about 6 hours, with kids its 8 to 9.

Pawley’s Plantation Golf and Country Club was our favorite place to stay. You could rent two or three bedroom villas with a kitchen so you can make home cook meals. Cooking our own food became easier than going to different restaurants with picky eaters. Everyone knows their kids and mine only orders pizza, fries and hamburgers. It doesn’t matter where we would eat. It was always the same three choices. Taking the five to ten minute drive to the beach was the best. The kids loved going to the beach during the day and watching the moonlit ocean at night.

Here are my top five things to bring while traveling in a car full of kids:

1. DVD player and their favorite movie.

2. Lunch sac with a sandwich, chips, fruit and water.

3. Potty Seat lol it comes in handy when with toddlers.

4. Pillows and Blankets

5. First Aid Kit

You can go on and on with a list for kids but go with the basic’s when traveling in a car for a long period of time.
